Ellis County is located in central Texas. The largest town of Ellis is Waxahachie which is also the county seat. This county lies 30 miles south of Dallas. This county has become a popular area for those who commute to the Dallas to work, but want to escape the trappings of the city.
The largest communities are Waxahachie and Ennis, while smaller communities are Midlothian, Red Oak, Ferris, and Ovilla. Newer communities such as Italy, Milford, Glen Heights, Cedar Hill and May Pearl have also appeared as Dallas continues to grow.

Ellis County is rich in history with its beginnings starting before the settlers. Tonkawa Indians were the earliest inhabitants of Ellis, though parties of Wacos, Bidais, Anadarkos, and Kickapoos often hunted in the area as well. The first Europeans to arrive were the Spanish missionaries who worked with the Tonkawas. As the American settlers began to move into the region in the middle of the nineteenth century, the Indians offered little organized resistance. By 1859 the Tonkawas had been removed to Oklahoma.
Ellis County, comprising only 939 square miles of the Blackland Prairie, is almost treeless except for scattered mesquite, cacti, and shrubs, Bunch and short grass of various kinds. The majority of trees grow along the watercourses, such as ash, cottonwood, pecan, hackberry, bois d'arc, oak, and Elm. There are many streams which flow into the Trinity River, which forms the eastern boundary of the county.
With mild winters and warm summers, Ellis County is an ideal place to live, and is served by some of the best schools in the area.
